Frontline Flea and Tick FAQ

How do Frontline Plus and Frontline Top Spot spread over a pet's body?
How long does it take Frontline to spread over a pet's body?
Frontline spreads over a treated pet's body by a process called translocation. When Frontline is applied it gradually disperses by the pets natural oils, collecting in the oil glands in the pet's skin. Frontline is then wicked onto the hair over the next 30 days. The Frontline translocation process can take upt to 24 hours to complete.

How long after Frontline application can a pet be bathed or go swimming?
Frontline products remain effective for 30 days, even if a pet swims or is bathed. After application, keep the dog or cat from getting wet until the Frontline application area appears dry, usually within 24 hours. If Frontline is applied after a bath, make sure the pet is completely dry before application of Frontline.

Can I apply Frontline products sooner than 30 days?
No, research demonstrates that Frontline products control fleas and ticks for a full month so no reapplication is needed within 30 days.

Why do I see more fleas on my pet after applying Frontline?
Immediately after applying Frontline, you may see fleas but this is an indication that Frontline is working. Frontline makes fleas hyperexcited, drawing them to the top of the haircoat before dying.

Why do I still see ticks on my dog after applying Frontline?
Ticks can attach to your pet before dying on dogs treated with Frontline, but will be killed within 24-48 hours, prior to most disease transmission.

How long does it take for fleas to die?
In order for Frontline to kill fleas, they must come in contact with the haircoat or skin of a Frontline treated pet. Fleas will die within 18 hours of contact with the treated pet.

Can a tick feed before it dies?
Some ticks may, but the majority of ticks are killed before they feed. Frontline kills ticks before they are likely to transmit disease, including Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis, and fleas die before they can lay eggs.

Frontline was applied 2 weeks ago, why are there still fleas visible?
Frontline kills adult fleas on the pet when treated. However, if the Frontline treated pet is exposed to fleas again, new fleas may jump onto the pets coat. These fleas will die of exposure to Frontline within 18 hours, and will not have a chance to lay eggs.

Can Frontline be used on pets besides dogs and cats?
Since Frontline is not labeled for animals other then dogs and cats, they should not be used on other species.

Does Frontline prevent the transmission of tick borne diseases like Lyme Disease?
Although Frontline does not prevent the transmission of tick borne diseases, using Frontline reduces the time that a tick will spend on a pet, so disease transmission is less likely to occur. Tick borne diseases are usually transmitted after a tick has been attached for 48 hours or more, and Frontline will kill a tick within 24 to 48 hours of contact.

Can I apply Frontline anywhere on the pet's hair?
Since Frontline works through the skin glands, it must be applied directly to the pets skin, not the haircoat. Place the Frontline applicator tip through the animal's hair to the skin of the shoulder blades.

Should I buy Frontline Online?
American Kennel Supply is your best source of information and advise about your pets health. There are many look alike flea and tick products available in retail stores, but they are not as effective as Frontline.

Can I use Frontline if my dog is on medication?
Frontline products are not systemically active and have no known interactions with systemic medications.

Can I use Frontline if I have already applied another flea and tick control product?
There are no known interactions between Frontline and any other flea and tick control products. You should wait at least 24 hours between applications. Flea collars should be removed from your pet at the time of Frontline application, and for 24 hours afterward to prevent the collar from interfering with the Frontline translocation.
